Worship in Spirit and Truth

crossJohn 4:23-24

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth”

Jesus describes the worship which God would accept and be well pleased with.

1. In Spirit – We must depend upon God’s Spirit for strength and assistance, laying our souls under His influences and operations. We must devote our own spirits to, and employ them in, the service of God, (Roman1:9). We must worship Him with fixedness of thought and a flame of affection, with all that is within us. So to worship God with our spirit is to worship Him with our graces (Hebrew12:28).

2. In Truth – In sincerity, God requires not only the inward part in our worship, but truth in the inward part (Psalm51:65).
We must mind the power of true worship more than the form of worship; we must aim at God’s glory and not to be seen of men. We must draw near with a true heart (Hebrew10:22). When God comes to inquire for worship, the question will not be laid upon the place where we worship God, but upon the state of mind in which we worship Him.
